Northern Developments has been building, leasing, and managing commercial properties across Western Canada since 1979. Nearly five decades of experience, a portfolio of properties spanning Alberta, and no website that reflected any of it. Blair and Co. built them one clean, authoritative, and built around the property portfolio that is the core of the business. The result is a site that gives prospective tenants and investors an accurate first impression of who Northern Developments is, what they own, and how to get in touch.

Northern Developments had nearly five decades of commercial real estate experience in Western Canada and a portfolio of properties across Alberta, but no website that reflected the credibility, depth, or professionalism of the business behind them. The vision was to build a clean, authoritative web presence that communicated the company's long-standing market position, showcased its active property portfolio, and gave prospective tenants and investors a clear, confident first impression. The site needed to feel like the company: rooted, experienced, and serious about Alberta communities without being corporate or cold.

Methodology

Blair and Co. approached the project as a brand and content challenge first, and a development challenge second. Before any design work began, we audited the existing brand assets, mapped the audience (prospective tenants, investors, and community partners), and defined the information hierarchy the site needed to support. Northern Developments operates across multiple property types and locations, so the property search and listing structure required careful planning to be usable at scale. We chose WordPress with Elementor as the build platform to give the Northern team full control over content and property listings without developer dependency. The visual direction drew from the company’s established green and gold palette, grounding the site in the Alberta landscape and the long-term, community-rooted character of the business.

Process

The project moved through four distinct phases. Discovery began with a structured briefing session covering the business, the audience, the competitive landscape, and the content requirements for each page. From that session we produced a full sitemap and content outline before any design began. Design and content development ran in parallel — wireframes were reviewed and approved before the visual layer was applied, ensuring layout decisions were driven by content rather than aesthetics. The property listing architecture was built as a custom post type structure, allowing each property to carry its own featured image, availability status, location, and detail page without manual page builds for each one. Development was completed in WordPress with full mobile optimization, page speed tuning, and on-page SEO configuration through Rank Math across all primary pages. The final phase included a full handoff session with the Northern team covering content management, property listing updates, and basic SEO maintenance.

Outcome

Northern Developments launched with a website that accurately represents the scale and credibility of the business for the first time. The property portfolio is fully searchable and filterable, with individual property pages that support leasing inquiries directly. The site is optimized for local search across Alberta markets, with structured schema markup, optimized page titles and meta descriptions, and a Google Business profile aligned to the web presence. The Northern team can update property listings, add new developments, and manage page content without agency support. The Coaldale Crossing development — a 74,000 square foot retail project with groundbreaking set for 2026 — was featured prominently on launch, generating leasing inquiry traffic from the first week the site went live.
