How we did it.

Micheal Wendl

Professional
Branding

Michael Wendl Law was a Hamilton-based law practice built around a single positioning statement: Judicious Representation. Blair and Co. developed the firm's full brand identity, from the MW monogram mark to the complete stationery and collateral suite. The result is a brand that communicates the authority, precision, and discretion a legal practice at this level demands, without relying on the visual cliches that make most law firm branding look interchangeable.

A lawyer's brand is doing quiet but serious work every time a client picks up a business card, opens a folder, or receives a letter. It communicates competence, stability, and trustworthiness before a word has been said in a meeting room. Michael Wendl needed a brand identity that reflected the calibre of representation his practice offers, with a visual presence that could hold its own in front of senior executives, corporate clients, and individuals facing high-stakes legal situations. The tagline Judicious Representation carried the strategic positioning perfectly, suggesting both legal expertise and the careful, considered judgement that defines the practice. The visual identity needed to be built to match it: precise, refined, and unmistakably professional without being cold or institutional.

Methodology

Blair and Co. developed the Michael Wendl Law identity around the MW monogram as the primary brand mark, designed to function as a signature element that is distinctive enough to carry the brand on its own and restrained enough to feel appropriate in every context the firm operates in. The monogram was constructed with deliberate architectural quality, with letterforms that reference structure, balance, and order without being decorative. The brand palette of near-black, warm grey, and silver gave the identity the depth and sophistication appropriate for a premium legal practice, with the silver treatment on the monogram adding a material quality that reads as considered and intentional rather than purely graphic. The Judicious Representation tagline was set in a refined serif to contrast the structural weight of the monogram, creating a typographic relationship between mark and word that communicates both authority and precision. Every element of the stationery system was designed as a unified suite, from the letterhead and business cards through to the notebook, envelope, mug, and carry bag, so that every touchpoint a client encounters carries the same visual standard.

Process

Blair and Co. developed the brand identity through a structured discovery and concept process, beginning with a strategic brief covering the practice areas, the client profile, the competitive landscape of Calgary legal branding, and the impression the firm needed to make at first contact. The monogram concept was developed and refined before any stationery work began, ensuring the mark worked at every scale from a business card to a carry bag before the full system was built around it. The stationery suite was developed as a complete set: letterhead, business cards, notebook, envelope, mug, presentation folder, and carry bag, all produced to a consistent specification that allowed each piece to work independently while reading as part of a single cohesive brand. Print specifications and finish selections were made to reinforce the premium positioning of the identity, with the dark base and silver mark treatment requiring careful production coordination to achieve the right visual weight across different substrates.

Outcome

Michael Wendl Law launched with a brand identity that communicates the authority and precision of the practice at every client touchpoint. The MW monogram functions as a strong and distinctive mark that is immediately recognisable across the full collateral suite, giving the firm a visual signature that holds its own against the larger institutional legal brands in the Calgary market. The complete stationery system gives the practice a consistent and professional presence in every client interaction, from an initial business card exchange to a formal legal correspondence, reinforcing the Judicious Representation positioning at every point of contact.
