New data from SparkToro puts a number on something Western Canadian business owners have felt for a while. In the first four months of 2026, about 68 percent of U.S. Google searches ended without a single click to any website. Two years ago that figure was 60 percent. The gap between being searched for and being visited gets wider every quarter.
The cause is not a mystery. Google now answers more questions directly on the results page, and AI Overviews show up on more than one in five searches. When one appears, clicks to the pages below it fall by close to 60 percent. Someone hunting for a Calgary contractor, an Edmonton clinic, or a local supplier often gets what they need without ever landing on your site.
For a lot of small businesses, that quietly breaks the old plan. The plan was to rank first and let the traffic follow. Ranking still counts, but the payoff for it has shrunk. You can hold the top organic spot and watch your visits drop while your position stays put.
The businesses holding their ground are the ones being quoted inside the answer, not just listed under it. That means clear, specific pages that answer the exact questions buyers ask, an accurate and complete Google Business Profile, real reviews, and content written to be the source an AI pulls from. It also means treating your email list and direct customer relationships as traffic you own rather than traffic you rent from a search box.
None of this is a quick fix, and any agency promising one is guessing. It is steady work on the pages and profiles that decide whether you appear in the answer at all.
